At 9.30am this morning the Mayor, Maureen Fearn, cut the ribbon and declared the new Library open! This has been a long campaign and many folk did not believe that we would win through. Nevertheless with the support of the people of Southport we did. Special mention must go to Jean Alexander who was the public face of the campaign and who did not shirk from standing out in the cold collecting signatures or speaking to council meetings. We should also mention the Visiter and in particular the Editor. His entusiam for the project was a key factor in our success. More information and photographs are on the blog for today.

Birkdale Lib Dems chalked up a major victory in the local elections on Thursday. For the first time we achieved over 50% of the votes. Speaking after the result Iain Brodie Browne thanked the residents of Birkdale for their support and pledged to work hard as their councillor. The results was as follows:

Birkdale Lib Dems have chosen Iain Brodie Browne to fight the election for Sefton Council which takes place on the same day as the General Election. Iain is the Deputy Leader of the Lib Dems on Sefton Council.

Last night was the final of the three televised Leaders' debates. Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg, debated with Gordon Brown and David Cameron about the economy. Subjects discussed included breaking up the banks, creating more jobs and reinvigorating the British economy.

On Thursday 29th April from 8.30pm, BBC One will host the final live Prime Ministerial Debate of the General Election from the Midlands. Nick Clegg, Gordon Brown and David Cameron will again be going head to head in the run up to the General Election next Thursday.

An average of five polls conducted immediately after the Sky TV Leaders Election debate on Thursday night put Nick Clegg as the winner, with all instant polls showing him ahead of Gordon Brown. After the Foreign Affairs-led debate from Bristol dominated by issues like Iraq, immigration and climate change, Nick Clegg won 3 of the 5 polls on the night, building on his position after the first debate.

The second Party Leaders Debate is taking place this Thursday starting at 8pm on Sky News. Nick Clegg, Gordon Brown and David Cameron will again be going head to head in a TV debate in the run up to the General Election on May 6th, this time leading on Foreign Affairs.

The polls following the first ever Party Leaders General Election debate on ITV are showing that Nick Clegg has won a convincing victory over David Cameron and Gordon Brown. The debate was the first ever Leaders debate during a UK General Election campaign, and the pollsters are giving it as a big victory for Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats.

The first ever TV debate between the three candidates to be the next Chancellor has seen Lib Dem Vince Cable win a clear victory. In a Channel 4 on-line poll carried out immediately after the debate, Vince out-polled both Alistair Darling and George Osborne.

The long battle to secure a temporary town centre home for Southport Library has been won. At this morning's meeting of the cabinet Birkdale Councillor Iain Brodie Browne moved that the temporary Library should go ahead in the ground floor of the Visiter Office in Tulketh Street.

• Southport's town centre Library will have to shut for nearly 3 years from early 2010 while much-needed refurbishment work is undertaken on the Arts Centre and Library complex (the £15 million "Southport Cultural Centre" project).

Sefton Council's ruling Cabinet has thrown out throw a proposal to relocate Southport's town centre library to the currently vacant space at the rear of Southport Market Hall during the 3 years of work on the Arts Centre and Library buildings.

Southport's Liberal Democrat councillors, who hold two-thirds of Southport's 21 council seats, have expressed their unanimous support for the idea of temporarily relocating the town's library into the rear of Southport Market Hall.
