The long battle to secure a temporary town centre home for Southport Library has been won. At this morning's meeting of the cabinet Birkdale Councillor Iain Brodie Browne moved that the temporary Library should go ahead in the ground floor of the Visiter Office in Tulketh Street.

Sefton Council's ruling Cabinet has thrown out throw a proposal to relocate Southport's town centre library to the currently vacant space at the rear of Southport Market Hall during the 3 years of work on the Arts Centre and Library buildings.

Southport's Liberal Democrat councillors, who hold two-thirds of Southport's 21 council seats, have expressed their unanimous support for the idea of temporarily relocating the town's library into the rear of Southport Market Hall.

It is time to take action over the so called cultural centre in Southport-that is the Art Gallery, Library and Arts Centre. The dire state of the buildings has been revealed to councillors. Failure to act now could lead to the complex being closed and boarded up. A minimum of £8m is needed to keep the buildings open. If we are to spend that sort of money then we can lever in significantly more cash to do a proper job. Cllr. Tony Robertson the Lib Dem Leader on Sefton Council says that he hopes that the Council will agree to relax the presently rigid mobile mast moratorium when it debates the matter on Thursday of this week.

The Atkinson Library and Arts Centre along with the Arts Centre make up the Southport Cultural Centre. Councillors have learned about the poor state of repair of these building after a detailed condition study was carried out. It is clear that action must be taken swiftly if we are to keep this very important Town Centre Asset.
